A safari is a true adventure and one that also makes for a memorable holiday. Here are a few things you might want to know about your safari with us
TRAVEL INFORMATION

• Visas: Visas are required by all except nationals of South Africa, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada, for a stay upto 30 days. All other nationalities require visas issued beforehand. Visas cost about US$ 30 and are valid for 3 months. All visitors have to show proof of onward ticket / return ticket. Please confirm exact requirements from the airline or the local Kenya embassy.

• Immigration Requirements : When leaving the country, passengers will be asked to verify the contents of the baggage at the Customs desk. Export of products made from Elephant, Rhino and Turtle are prohibited.

• Passports: All visitors are required to carry a valid passport. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months from date of travel.

GETTING TO KENYA
There are several airlines which fly to Kenya. They are Kenya Airways, KLM, British Airways, Gulf Air, Emirates, Air India and South African Airways to name a few. The main international airport in Kenya is the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

HEALTH

• Vaccination: Inoculation against Yellow fever and Cholera are not mandatory, but recommended. Anyone entering Kenya from or through a Yellow Fever infected area, must be in possession of a valid International certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever.

• Malaria: It is advisable that you take malaria tablets before entering Kenya. Start the course at least one week before entering Kenya. Please consult your physician.

• Drinking water: Bottled mineral water is widely available in Kenya at reasonable prices. Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Shoor Safari vehicles carry a complimentary stock of mineral water.

ROAD TRAVEL

Kenya has an extensive road network. One drives on the left. All major roads are tarred. The state of the road surfaces is variable. The roads in the National Park are generally good gravel surfaces, but may at times be dusty or muddy. However, travel is nonetheless comfortable. SECURITY

Kenya is generally a safe tourist destination with a hospitable people. However, visitors must take precautions, some of which have been outlined below.

  • Do not wear expensive jewellery and watches when walking on the streets.
  • Do not leave valuables or cash in your room or tent.
  • When staying at a lodge or camp, do not wander off into the bush alone, keep to the clearly marked paths.

CLIMATE
 

Kenya enjoys an excellent tropical climate free from extremes such as hot summers or cold winters. It is warm and humid at the coast and dry in the North and North Eastern parts of the country. The warmest period is in February and March and the coolest period is in July & August. Long rains are from April to June and short rains are from October to December.

CLOTHING
It is usually warm during the day and cool at night. Moderately warm wear is required in the early morning and at night, such as a sweater and lighter wear during the day e.g. T-shirt / Shorts. You should also have comfortable casual walking shoes.

ACCOMMODATION
There are several internationally recognized 4 and 5 star hotels in Nairobi and Mombasa offering the usual facilities. You can stay in private homes in the middle of a ranch/game sanctuary or in Swahili-style houses. Many ranches and private homes are recommended for those who are interested in something different.

FOOD AND DRINKS
Most visitors to Kenya are impressed by the quality and diversity of food offered. Hotels and lodges offer excellent cuisines to cater for the international traveler, and include a full English, Continental breakfast, buffet lunch and dinner, with a variety of meats and vegetarian dishes. African and Indian dishes are sometimes also included in the menu. A variety of soft drinks, wines and spirits are readily available.

MONEY MATTERS

• Rate / Denominations: The Kenyan currency unit is Shilling, which is divided into 100 cents. Maximum note denomination is Kshs.1000.

• Banks: Banks are open from 9am to 3pm , Mondays to Fridays and 9am to 11 am on Saturday. Banks operate 24 hour at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Moi International Airport.

• Tipping: Tipping is not mandatory, but can be given on one’s wish. Usually 10% is given at restaurants and hotels.

• VAT : 18% VAT is levied on most of the goods and services and cannot be reclaimed by the visitor.

COMMUNICATION
International and local direct dialing is available from Nairobi & Mombasa and most other towns in Kenya. Telephone directories list the dialing codes. Facilities for facsimile and email are available in most larger hotels and also in some safari lodges.
