Western
Kenya is a classic off the circuit location, with few tourist
venturing to this equally beautiful part of the country.
Ranging from lush green tea plantations and scenic highlands,
and the third largest freshwater lake in the world. Some
notable off circuit locations in Western Kenya have been
listed below. These include Kericho, Lake Victoria, Mount
Elgon and surrounding areas. |
|
Kericho
Town:
This is
the tea growing hub of the Kenya and indeed, the whole of
Africa. The tea estates in Kericho produce some of the best
tea in the world which is exported to all parts of the world.
The lush green tea estates on the rolling hills of Kericho
form a scenic and visually refreshing landscape. Only a
One and a half hour drive from Nakuru, Kericho is good for
a day tour, from Nakuru, which may include a round of golf
at the golf club, a visit to a tea factory / estate and
lunch at the historic Tea Hotel. |

Kakamega
Forest:
Close
to Lake Victoria, to the north east, lies Kakamega forest,
a remnant of the thick ancient forests that stretched from
Central to East Africa. A treasure for bird watchers, the
forest is home to several rare bird species such as brown-eared
woodpecker, wattle-eye, dusky tit and the blue headed bee-eater
among others. The forest is also a relaxing, quiet hideaway
with few tourists present. Overnight accommodation at a
basic lodge in the forest can be arranged by prior request. |

Mount
Elgon:
Also
in Western Kenya, this snow capped mountain lies on the
border of Kenya and Uganda, with the highest peak actually
lying on the Ugandan side. It is Kenya's second highest
mountain. On the foot of the mountain lies one of the most
unspoilt, least visited national parks, mostly forested,
and offering some of the best hiking and trout fishing locations
in the country. There are several interesting caves which
are also frequented by the forest elephants, buffalo and
other wildlife in search of mineral salts. |
